My goal is to create portraits that show your friends true nature and character. Portraits that I hope you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Bio

I’ve had the great pleasure to photograph hundreds of pets. Besides my paid work, for many years now I’ve done portraits of animals at the Oregon Humane Society that have had an especially hard time finding a new home. There I've had the great opportunity to tune my approach to a wide variety of animals from those who are shy or scared to those whose philosophy seems to be “there are no strangers, only friends I haven’t met yet”; from the very ill to the bouncy, exuberant, never a still moment. Among the many things I’ve learned from all of them is the importance of patience, and working on the animal’s schedule, not mine. I’ve also had the good fortune to learn a great deal from some people very wise in animal behavior. All these experiences have given me a breadth of ideas and tools to draw from as we create unique portraits of your friend.

I sold my first prints nearly 20 years ago, and have been lucky to have been able to study under and work with a few top named photographers over the years. But, every photographer has his own style and approach. I recommend, as you choose a photographer, that you look at their work and see if you connect with it. Ultimately, it's the emotional connection that's important. I have many samples of my work in my on-line galleries, and I'd be happy to set up a time to show you my print portfolios and answer any questions you have.

Approach

To create these portraits we’ll work together, first to create an environment where your friend(s) feel comfortable being themselves. Before the photo session we’ll talk. This will give us an opportunity to develp a plan that will meet your goals and will fit your pets interests and personality. With many pets, I find it’s helpful to start with something fun and energetic. Perhaps some time at the park chasing a ball, or a home playing with a toy, or galloping around an arena. Anywhere that’s fun and burns off some energy. This also helps me build a raport in a fun setting and makes it easier to get more casual shots afterward. But every pet is different thus every shoot is different.

Photographically I tend to favor a photojournalistic style that allow me to be flexible and ready to capture those expressions and actions that most show off your pets unique character and charm. But we can also fit in time to do more precisely lit studio shots which also make for very nice final prints.

Contact me and we can talk about how best to tailor a photo session for you and your friend(s).
